In the spirit of Bridget Jones’s Diary, this fresh, irreverent, and simply hilarious book will leave you laughing out loud. In this wildly funny journal of a year in the life of Georgia Nicolson, British author Louise Rennison has perfectly captured the soaring joys and bottomless angst of being a teenager. I went to a party dressed as a stuffed olive. I am very ugly and need to go into an ugly home. In fourteen days the summer hols will be over and then it will be back to Stalag 14 and Oberfuhrer Frau Simpson and her bunch of sadistic teachers. I have a three-year-old sister who may have peed somewhere in my room. I have one of those under-the-skin spots that will never come to a head but lurk in a red way for the next two years. I don’t know that we would have the same friendship, but I think that we would have met regardless. If that friend had not set us up, we would have eventually met somehow in the scene that we were in, in D.C. But there’s another story behind how you meet. When you tell the story of how you met, you tell this very superficial one line: “We met at this place, at this time.” That’s the meet-cute. So we were set up.īeck: My meta follow-up question to that is: How many times have you told that story now?Īminatou: My God, we’ve told that story too many times to count. Our mutual friend Dayo conspired to be the host that night in part so she could have both of us in attendance. Julie Beck: Let’s start at the beginning: How did you meet?Īminatou Sow: We met in Washington, D.C., in 2009, at a Gossip Girl viewing party.Īnn Friedman: But we also met because a friend very intentionally wanted us to meet each other. It's all about the narrator in this one and apparently in subsequent audio releases of the series. Don't confuse my review as a scathing criticism on Adams. The closest experience to this book was a very bad rendition of Tom Sawyer where the the voice of Tom was so.I can't even describe it. In short, then, I had every intention of listening to the complete series but then was convinced by the narrator not to. After listening to the voice and then seeing the producer's name, it's a wonder he didn't prevent this bad portrayal. It is because the narrator's Zaphod is jarringly stereotypical. Trust me, you will be cursing Douglas Adams for every moment he decided to include Zaphod in the book, and not because Zaphod is annoying. It is the exact opposite of the Hitchiker s Guide voice and 100 times more annoying. Granted, it's a different actor, but that's where the problem is: Zaphod Beeblebrox. The voice acting is, in my opinion, atrocious. If you expect the same quality in subsequent books.well, you're in for a shock. First off, if you've listened to the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy by downloading it from Audible, then you were probably pleased with the voice acting. But there's no denying that things are happening between the girl with the killer swing and the boy with the killer smile. This is an opportunity to shine, win a scholarship and go to university, something no one in her family has done.īut Fred's presence on the team isn't exactly welcome - especially not to rich golden boy Ryan Berenger, whose best friend was kicked off the team to make a spot for Fred. When Native American Fredricka 'Fred' Oday is invited to become the only girl on the school's golf team, she can't say no. So let's turn, now, to Liz Fichera's Hooked, published in 2013 by Harlequin Teen. And though alcoholism is one of our realities, does an alcoholic mom or dad HAVE to be part of the story? And I don't want the Native characters to be saved by non-Native ones. I want the ways that the characters speak and the things they say to sound like Native people. and, well, you know what I mean.Ĭourse, I want those books to ring true. Point is, stories about us as-we-are, with our cars and trucks (old or new) and our cell phones. I'm among those who wish that we had more books featuring Native protagonists in which the setting is today. This richly illustrated introduction follows Vincent van Gogh's story from his earliest pictures of peasants and rural workers, through his bright Parisian period, to his final, feverish burst of creative energy in the South of France during the last two and a half years of his life. It also has an extensive biographical text, zooming in on all of Van Gogh’s life phases. His episodes of depression and anxiety would eventually claim his life, when, in 1890, he committed suicide shortly after his 37th birthday. VINCENT VAN GOGH: THE COMPLETE PAINTINGS Rainer Metzger (1989) Posted on Ap 7 Comments Just to be clear: generally speaking, this book is amazing: it collects all his surviving paintings (871), in overall good quality reproductions. The striking colour, emphatic brushwork, and contoured forms of his work powerfully influenced the current of. Walther, Vincent van Gogh, Rainer Metzger. Vincent van Gogh, in full Vincent Willem van Gogh, (born March 30, 1853, Zundert, Netherlandsdied July 29, 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris, France), Dutch painter, generally considered the greatest after Rembrandt van Rijn, and one of the greatest of the Post-Impressionists. Yet as he was deploying the lurid colors, emphatic brushwork, and contoured forms that would subsequently make his name, van Gogh battled not only the disinterest of his contemporary audience but also devastating bouts of mental illness. Examines the life and art of nineteenth-century Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, and features color. In Sunflowers, The Starry Night, Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, and many paintings and drawings beyond, we recognize an artist uniquely dexterous in the portrayal of mood and place through paint, pencil, charcoal, or chalk. Today, the works of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) are among the most well known and celebrated in the world. The search for effective drug dependence treatments is therefore paramount. A minority of these users develop substance use disorders such as drug dependence, but this is still a serious problem affecting 15–39 million people for illicit drugs, 76 million for alcohol, and more than a billion for tobacco ( Degenhardt & Hall, 2012). This legal drug use significantly contributes to DALYs in more than 20 countries, with tobacco smoking increasing from third to second largest risk factor in the global burden of disease between 19, while alcohol drinking increased from eighth to fifth in the same period ( Lim et al., 2012), alone contributing to 9.6% of mental health DALY ( Degenhardt et al., 2013 Whiteford et al., 2013). This scenario is aggravated using the legal drugs such as tobacco and alcohol reaching nearly one and three billion people, respectively ( Degenhardt & Hall, 2012 Ng et al., 2014). This illicit drug use is estimated to cause 10.9% of the DALYs in mental disorders ( Whiteford et al., 2013). This illicit drug use causes considerable morbidity and mortality in many countries ( Degenhardt, Chiu, Sampson, & Kessler, 2008) and is an important contributor to the global burden of disease, directly accounting for 20 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2010, representing a 52% increase since 1990 ( Degenhardt et al., 2013 Whiteford et al., 2013). Recent estimates suggest that 149–271 million people used illicit drugs worldwide in 2009 ( Degenhardt & Hall, 2012). |
