Profoundly intertwined with human civilization, milk has a compelling and a surprisingly global story to tell, and historian Mark Kurlansky is the perfect person to tell it. And today, milk is a test case in the most pressing issues in food politics, from industrial farming and animal rights to GMOs, the locavore movement, and advocates for raw milk, who controversially reject pasteurization. Pasteurization slowly became a legislative matter. But during the nineteenth century, mass production and urbanization made milk safety a leading issue of the day, with milk-borne illnesses a common cause of death. But while mother's milk may be the essence of nourishment, it is the milk of other mammals that humans have cultivated ever since the domestication of animals more than 10,000 years ago, originally as a source of cheese, yogurt, kefir, and all manner of edible innovations that rendered lactose digestible, and then, when genetic mutation made some of us lactose-tolerant, milk itself.īefore the industrial revolution, it was common for families to keep dairy cows and produce their own milk. Mark Kurlansky's first global food history since the bestselling Cod and Salt the fascinating cultural, economic, and culinary story of milk and all things dairy-with recipes throughout.Īccording to the Greek creation myth, we are so much spilt milk a splatter of the goddess Hera's breast milk became our galaxy, the Milky Way.

One of the doctor’s patients, a young woman wearing dark glasses for an eye infection, works as a prostitute and goes blind while having sex with a man at a hotel. The only option, the doctor admits, is to “wait and see.”Īfter the blind man’s appointment, the car-thief also suddenly goes blind, as does the doctor later that night. The doctor is baffled: there’s seemingly nothing wrong with the blind man’s eyes, and his condition is unprecedented. It turns out that the person who drove the blind man home was a thief-he stole their car, so the blind man and his wife take a taxi to the eye doctor. After another driver helps the blind man back to his apartment, the blind man knocks over a vase and cuts himself trying to pick up the pieces, then passes out on the couch until the blind man’s wife comes home and helps him clean up. The man yells out that he has suddenly gone blind: his entire field of vision is a sea of whiteness. At an intersection in front of a traffic light, a driver remains stopped after the light turns green, which annoys the other drivers. In Iron Ambition, Tyson elaborates on the life lessons that D’Amato passed down to him, and reflects on how the trainer’s words of wisdom continue to resonate with him outside the ring. In Tyson’s bestselling memoir Undisputed Truth, he recounted the role D’Amato played in his formative years, adopting him at age sixteen after his mother died and shaping him both physically and mentally after Tyson had spent years living in fear and poverty. When Cus D’Amato first saw thirteen-year-old Mike Tyson spar in the ring, he proclaimed, “That’s the heavyweight champion of the world.” D’Amato, who had previously managed the careers of world champions Floyd Patterson and José Torres, would go on to train the young Tyson and raise him as a son. No other species has so drastically changed life on earth. But many, perhaps millions, are stranded where they are unable, or lack time, to adapt. Some plants and animals have survived by migrating. With the discovery of energy sources underground, we began our greatest and most deadly transformation-of the composition of the atmosphere and the oceans. They-we-started demolishing forests to grow food and spreading animals, plants, and other life forms to new continents, thus changing the face of the earth. As modern humans spread from East Africa around the globe, they found archaic humans similar to themselves and gigantic animals (megafauna)-both of which they wiped out. Humans began impacting the world from the start. Scientists have identified five previous mass extinction events over 500 million years and many believe a Sixth Extinction, set in motion by humans, is underway. In The Sixth Extinction, journalist Elizabeth Kolbert argues that humans are rapidly changing the shape of the earth and the composition of the atmosphere, unleashing a mass extinction of most living things, quite possibly including ourselves. 1-Page Summary 1-Page Book Summary of The Sixth Extinction It's a personal taste, I think, but something I hadn't realized until I got this anthology. But I found a male voice (regardless of how talented) awkward when speaking female dialog or narrating certain romantic situations. Granted, either way one gender has to 'speak' as the other, but I guess I'm used to female voices imitating male speech. Another thing I learned from this purchase is that, basically, I prefer female voices reading the story. D'Alessandro's is OK and Laurens' is downright awful (unless you're a big Nancy Drew fan). Frankly, of the four Balogh's and Hern's are truly worth reading. Each section should have a heading and then the chapters within it should be numbered. This is a sloppy approach-easier from a production standpoint but to the detriment of the reader. If, for example, you want to go to the next story because you decided you're just not going to like the one you're on (and, trust me, this will happen!), you have to start skipping forward since you don't know where one ends and the other begins. But there is no way to know where one begins and the other ends since the chapters are sequentially numbered as if it was all one book. He lusted after Carolyn, sure, but he never imagined that once he lured her to his bed. Theoretically, these are four stories, separate and independent from each other. The last thing Daniel wanted was to be shackled by marriage vows. The first is that, from now on, I will avoid anthologies because of the way they are handled.
